Shaving in the Sauna: What You Need to Know

If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s okay to shave in a sauna, we’re here to tell you that it’s not a good idea. Here’s all you need to know about why you shouldn’t shave in a sauna—save it for after!

Diluted blood vessels

The heat from saunas causes a person’s core temperature to increase. This leads to a faster heart rate, thereby making the heart pump more blood through the arteries and veins.

Increased blood flow dilates the blood vessels, and they become thinner and more elastic. If you’re shaving in a sauna, the risk of cutting yourself with the razor is quite high. Nicking a diluted blood vessel will cause large amounts of blood to pour out, and could result in a serious injury.

Risk of contaminated blood

If people were allowed to shave in a sauna, the chances of coming into contact with someone’s blood would increase.

Blood carries many diseases, and coming into contact with someone’s contaminated blood could cause many life-threatening diseases such as HIV, malaria, etc.

Unhygienic and unattractive

Imagine going into a sauna for a relaxing session and seeing someone’s hair littering the floor. Not only would this make you feel uneasy, but it's also unhygienic.
Saunas are meant to be comfortable experiences that reduce stress and relieve pain. Having a dirty floor with detritus pricking the soles of our bare feet would ruin the whole atmosphere and leave you feeling grimy and unclean.

There is also a danger that someone could slip in leftover shaving foam/cream, as it’s usually slick. Mixing a room full of steam and an already slippery floor with another slick compound could prove to be very harmful.

Shave after a sauna

The best time to shave is after a sauna. The hair and skin are humidified from the heat of the sauna, making the razor glide more smoothly and evenly over the surface of the skin. As the skin is already moisturized and soft, you’ll also need less shaving cream or gel compared to before.

If you’re tired of someone at your local gym, leaving their shaving waste on the floor of the sauna, consider investing in a home sauna for your use. USA Health and Wellness offers many home saunas online, and you can view all our products here.
